Breaking News: Optus fined $1.5m by ACCC over NBN Switch – Customers Misled for 2 Years

The Federal Court has whacked Optus with a $1.5 million fine after it found Australia’s second largest Internet provider had misled consumers for almost two years over the NBN, reports News.com.au

 

News.com.au is today reporting another big telco, Optus, has been fined $1.5 million. This was for being found guilty of intentionally misleading their customers when it came to having to switch to the provider’s NBN services.

According to News.com.au, “The court found Optus told about 14,000 customers that their services would be disconnected if they did not move to the NBN, in as little as 30 days in some instances.  There were also cases where the telco deceived customers by telling them they had to sign up to Optus’ NBN services, when they could have chosen any internet service provider. It was found Optus reaped about $750,000 from the misleading activity, which lasted from October 2015 to March 2017”.

Forcing customers to switch to a provider’s NBN service is not only illegal, it is untrue! Contrary to this and what might be read in a lot of mainstream media, you don’t have to connect with specific providers who offer NBN services. Nor do you have to connect to an NBN service at all, especially if there is an alternative available that doesn’t rely on the NBN network.

So, what is the truth?

As a consumer, you have a choice when it comes to your Internet Service Provider. That is number one.

Now, it is true that as the NBN rolls out, the copper wire that currently connects your house to phone and Internet services (that rely on the copper/ADSL network) will be disconnected. But, that does not mean that you have to go with the NBN!
