What’s the deal with Uniti not guaranteeing maximum speeds 24/7?

We get asked a lot why we don’t guarantee our customers maximum speeds all the time, which is a fair question. After all, if you’re going to switch to an NBN Alternative, you need to know that you’ll get what you’re paying for. Yep, we get it.

So let’s break it down.

Turns out no ISP can guarantee maximum speeds 24/7

It’s true. While technology has helped move the telecommunications industry to the next level, it’s not perfect. Yet.

In terms of Uniti’s technology (fixed wireless broadband), it works exceptionally well the majority of the time. But, sometimes things happen that are out of our control. Things like:

1. Network Congestion

If you have multiple users in your home or office using lots of data at the same time, you may experience slower speeds. There are two solutions to this: upgrade to a higher speed plan, or improve your internal network (more on this later).

  Congestion may also occur in Uniti’s fibre backhaul and the number of people accessing a particular tower site, at a particular time. No need to worry about this too much though, as we monitor our network closely to ensure we update and fix any issues before they start affecting our customers.  

2. Your Internal Network

Did you know that your Uniti connection is made up of an external network and an internal network?

Uniti controls your external network and it’s how we connect your home or business to our Super-Fast Broadband. The external network is everything that happens up to the Ethernet socket we install in your home or business. Anything beyond that, so your router, any cables or WiFi extenders, are all part of your internal network.

The set up of your internal network is unique to each customer and is your responsibility to manage.  

3. Faulty Hardware

Sometimes speed issues can be caused by the devices you are using to access the Internet. You may have a device with a faulty WiFi chip or Ethernet port.

Additionally, your device may not support the speeds that we are supplying you or the router cable may be faulty. It’s why we recommend testing with several devices and multiple cables as part of troubleshooting slow internet speeds. Or, start using a premium router instead.  

4. Content Location

The content you access online from websites, apps and games all come from servers. Some servers are located overseas, some are local. Some have ample processing power, RAM and bandwidth, whilst some don’t. And, some might be really popular at particular times and become congested. All of these factors could influence the speeds you achieve when accessing content.
